In the aftermath of 1998 Category 5 Hurricane Mitch my
husband and I answered God's call to mission by participating in the first of
our seven trips to Honduras. We cancelled our plans to celebrate our 25th
anniversary with a cruise and used the money and time to volunteer on a
presbytery work team headed to Tegucigalpa in April of 1999.
That faith transforming experience is explained in my essay "Unseasonably
Christmas". (Into All the World published it as "After the Storm" because it
also appeared in Moody Monthly).
I was moved to bring their needs for education to the women of our
presbytery. We are now providing scholarships for 54 children, and helping two
graduates to attend college. The following year I met an amazing Honduran
pastor, and some incredible Christian women. These poor Hondurans were running
the equivalent of a Good Will Store out of the upper room of the church.
You can read about this ministry in "Stitching
a Dream" (Horizons
magazine). My husband has driven two
school buses loaded with sewing machines, notions and fabric among other needed
supplies 5000 to Tegucigalpa Honduras. Together with the Presbytery of
Northumberland and CCD we have helped launch 6 sewing cooperatives in Honduras.
The article explains how this project is changing lives and building community
in North and Central America. |
